Crossover Classes
These classes combine techniques used in 2 of our 4 studio spaces. This variety of combination classes can only be found at SGAA!
***Every student who comes to participate in glass making classes is required to wear eye protection and closed toed shoes. No exceptions will be made!***

Beginner Level Classes:
Glass Tapestries: Flame Shop/Warm Shop (CC 100)

This unique art form using clear and colored stringers is simply stunning. On day one, you will make an 8"x8" piece using prefabricated Bullseye stringers to learn the process of making Glass Tapestries. On day two, you will get on the torch and pull some of your own stringers. You will learn to pull single color or twisted 2-tone stringers. You will then construct your second piece using a combination of prefabricated stringers and your very own custom stringers! Your class fee includes materials for 2 8x8 projects that can either be left flat or slumped into a mold. No prior experience required.

Faculty Instructor: Alysa Phiel
This class will teach students how to use scrap glass and turn it into a beautiful work of art. On day one, students will set up scrap glass and a screen mesh system so when it heats up and drips out the bottom, it falls into a dish and creates a striking mottled design. You will learn how to make 3 types of screens and can use one during class for a finished project. On day two, students can slice their glass piece and design a composition or use the piece as is to create a final piece either to be left flat or slumped into a mold. Your class tuition includes sheet glass for one finished project. No prior experience required.

In the first part of this class, students will make two fused glass cabochons using pieces of opaque, transparent, and Dichroic sheet glass. Then, students will learn how to create a bezel setting of precious metal clay to transform their cabochons into beautiful silver-framed pendants. There will also be discussion about kiln firing, hand polishing and patina options. This class is limited to 6 students. No prior experience required. Return students welcome.

In this class, students will compose pattern bars in dams assembled in a kiln, creating unique colored bricks of glass. After the color bars are fired, students will meet for the second part of class in the Cold Shop to saw the brick into slices and assemble the cross sections into patterns of colors. Your pieces can be left flat or slumped into a mold of your choice. Your class tuition includes glass for 2 pattern bars and 1 finished project. Prerequisites: at least one 100 level Warm Shop class and Coldworking Basics.

Fusing with Flameworked Elements: Flame Shop/Warm Shop (CC 201)

4 Tuesdays, 6 - 9pm (12 hours)

Are you a fused glass artist who wants to take your work to a new level? Are you a flameworker interested in combining torch made elements with sheet glass? If so, this is the class for you! On days one and three, students will make flameworked components on the torch using Bullseye glass. On days two and four, students will work in our Warm Shop to compose your flameworked elements into designs on sheet glass to be fused and then slumped into a mold. Students will learn a diverse array of techniques including: glass cutting and basic fusing methods; and making stringers, ribbons, shards and murrini on a torch. You will make a total of 4 straight sided (no sawing or curved molds), medium-sized pieces. Pre-requisite: Beginning Beadmaking or Intro to Pendants.

Advanced Level Classes:
Fuse and Roll Ups: Warm Shop/Hot Shop (CC 300)

2 Saturdays, 12 - 4pm (8 hours)
Faculty Instructors: William Justiniano & Alysa Phiel
This crossover class will include instruction in both our Hot Shop and our Warm Shop. On day one, you will design several flat glass pieces to incorporate onto the surface of a furnace worked piece. Alysa will teach how to cut sheet glass and you will make forms using sheet glass, frit, and stringers. Bring sketch ideas to class! Alysa will fuse your pieces after class and have them ready to use on day two. On day two, you will arrange your fused pieces in our roll up kiln, and with instruction from William, apply your fused pieces to the surface of your hot glass piece. You will create 1 finished piece during this class and may have additional fused pieces left over. Prerequisite: Beginning Glassblowing or equivalent.

Faculty Instructor: William Justiniano
During this great class, William will work with students in our Flame Shop and our Hot Shop. On day one, William will teach you to create small sculptural components on the torch; you will learn basic torch working techniques and make abstract forms to roll up onto the surface of a furnace worked piece. On day two, you will heat up your torch worked pieces and apply them to the surface of your hot glass piece. You will create 1 finished piece during this class. This class is limited to 4 students. Prerequisite: Beginning Glassblowing or equivalent; Flame Shop experience helpful but not required.
