Glass Sword Workshop

Guest Instructor: Karl Taylor
During this 3-day workshop, students will create glass swords by utilizing both cold working and flameworking techniques. Students will bevel the edges of a clear blade and then make a handle of their own design on the torch. Students will be free to design solid or hollow handles, so if you have something specific in mind, bring the glass to make it! This workshop is limited to 4 students due to heavy cold working time. Intermediate/advanced skill level recommended.

Guest Instructor: Bronwen Heilman
This is an intermediate class focusing on how to work with wet enamels and how to apply them onto sheet glass. We will be focusing on applying a wet enamel on a flat surface, then after it is fired we will roll it onto our core bead. On Day 1, we will be creating our own small one-of-a-kind glass paintings. We will learn how different brushes create different effects, and how to sign your name on your work. On Day 2, we will be lighting the torch and rolling up our sleeves, as well as our paintings to create beautiful pieces of art. During this class, students will get plenty of practice to become comfortable with the amount of heat needed to apply the tile paintings.

Dellene is coming to Tucson! Learn how to keep the Dichroic sparkles with out burning it out. This 2-day class will incorporate how to develop an environment rich with Dichroic glass. Dichroic master, Dellene Peralta, will present this material through hands-on demonstrations and discussions and will help you bring forth the sparkles that are so desired.

Faculty Instructor: Leah Fairbanks
In this workshop, Leah will help students expand their knowledge of beadmaking using soft glass, (Effetre glass from Italy). Leah will cover: floral and cased canes, surface decorations, feathering, lattichino canes, and clear casing, with an emphasis on design, color blending, and precise application of surface decorations. Students will experiment with a variety of materials including: palladium and gold leaf, fine silver wire and foil, glass powders, multi-colored frit, and dichroic glass. Leah balances demonstrations with one on one attention and allows for students to be assisted with their individual needs. Intermediate/adva nced glass beadmaking skills required.

Guest Instructor: Margaret Zinser
This workshop is geared toward the intermediate beadmaker who wants to learn more about adding texture and organic details to their beadmaking repertoire. Margaret will share her strategies for mixing enamels, glass powders, frits, and metals to create a wide variety of effects: rocky textures, ceramic-like finishes, and rich color. Intermediate beadmaking skills required.

This class is designed for people with some experience in flameworking. We will cover solid sculpture encompassing the human figure, animals, avian, aquatic, and other denizens of the natural and dream worlds utilizing soft glass. It would benefit people who want to make sculptural beads and small sculpture for jewelry components. There will also be demonstrations involving tubing for hollow beads and vessel forms.

Faculty Instructor: John Kobuki
This class will explore the "Compression” technique used to make flowers and other deeply encased designs, utilizing solid rods of borosilicate, into marbles and pendants. Students will learn color overlaysand "tooling" tricks for more interesting layered petal and leaf designs. There will be a strong emphasis on heat and flame management and why Compression is the dynamic force in this technique. Intermediate to advance students recommended.
Encasing Minerals in Glass/Geode Workshop

Guest Instructor: Karl Taylor
During this 3-day workshop, students will create glass crystals and hollow geodes using tektites, moldavite, and silicon. The class begins with learning how to make hollow geodes with mixed media inclusions and solid crystals. With a heavy focus on coldworking and faceting, students will go on to make ring shaped geode pendants out of their geodes. On the final day of class, students will take the objects they made and create a Geological Cluster from their glass crystals and geodes. This class is limited to 4 students with some experience with borosilicate glass.
