Hot Shop Classes

Most Hot Shop classes are limited to 8 students. We only run classes when we have more than 3 people registered for the class. When we have more than 4 students, we use 2 work stations with 2 instructors. NEW FOR 2011-2012: every Hot Shop student is required to take either Learning to Assist OR Back to Basics AND Coldworking Basics OR our Coldworking Refresher Course.

***Every student who comes to participate in glass making classes is required to wear eye protection and closed toed shoes. No exceptions will be made!***

Furnace Glassblowing I (FGBI) *CREDIT CLASS*

Please note: students must register with both SGAA and UA or PCC. Our class tuition is in addition to UA/PCC tuition.

Learn the basics of furnace glassblowing in this intensive 100 hour class. Students will begin by learning to make paperweights and progress to blown forms. This course will focus on: design principles, basic skills in working liquid glass, proper tool usage, color application, cold working, and sandblasting. Students will progress from beginner level to confident intermediate students. No prior experience required.

Continue to develop your Hot Shop skills in the intermediate 100 hour class. Students will get plenty of bench time and continue learning about color theory in glass, color application, and experimentation with complex shapes and forms. Topics will include: cane pulls, goblet design, usages for optic molds, handle application, and color palette. Students will be encouraged to draw inspiration from historical and contemporary sources introduced in class discussions. Prerequisite: Minimum of 20 hours of glassblowing instruction required.

Faculty Instructor

Beginning Glassblowing is the perfect class for people who have always been curious about glassblowing. This class will teach you the basics of studio safety, proper tool usage, gathering glass out of a furnace, shaping, and adding color. Students can expect to make 2-4 blown forms during this 8 hour class. Beginning Glassblowing is a great entry level class; take this class twice or with Month of Sundays before registering for Intermediate classes. Return students welcome. Limited to 6 beginner level students.

Month of Sundays is ideal for the busy professional! Over the course of four Sundays, students will learn the basics of furnace glassblowing, including gathering, color application, and blown forms. Students will progress from paperweights to hollow forms such as tumblers, bowls, and vases. No prior experience required. Return students welcome.

This women's only class allows a comfortable environment for lady glassworkers to get together and work on their skills. We will start with paperweights and move on to tumblers, bowls, and vases using frit application, optic molds, and color trails. Jill will tailor her teaching style to the skill levels of each student. This class limited to 4 students.

Every new Hot Shop student is required to take this class or Back to Basics before registering for an intermediate level Hot Shop class. Knowing how to be an effective assistant is critical as a person progresses onto more complex projects. This class will focus on: punties, lip wraps, trails, feet, and handles. You will not be making any finished projects during this class. More class dates will be scheduled throughout the year. Prerequisite: a 100 level Hot Shop class.

This exciting intensive class will warm your blood during Tucson’s chilly winter months! Holiday Intensive will cover basic skills in working molten glass and color application. This intensive study is perfect for (High School and above) students who want to keep their creativity flowing during winter break. Our instructors will tailor their teaching styles to the skill levels of each student. Beginner to intermediate skill levels welcome.

Faculty Instructor

In this class, we will use ladles to pour liquid glass into small molds. Students will learn to use a sand mixture to make molds and then pour hot glass into their custom molds! Bring your own small objects to cast or use some of ours! Each student will leave the workshop wit hat least two castings, one small (fist sized) and one large (roughly 8" diameter). No glass working experience required.

Every Hot Shop student is required to take this class or Learning to Assist before registering for an intermediate level Hot Shop class. Our Back to Basics class is great for students who want to practice the fundamentals of glassblowing. Whether you have not taken classes at SGAA for several months/years, don't feel comfortable progressing to an intermediate level class, or just want to review blowing an even bubble, Back to Basics will allow you to hone crucial skill sets. Do not expect to take anything home with you; you might not even sit down all night! Prerequisite: at least one 100 level Hot Shop class.

This class provides an opportunity for students to work on various types of paperweights. Topics will include: exploring variations in solid shaping, advanced color application, and using tools to achieve various effects. Take this class with our Cutting Facets class to finish your work with style! Prerequisite: at least one 100 level Hot Shop class.

Pendant Lamp Class (HS 202)

Faculty Instructor

This intermediate level class will focus on making glass pendant lampshades. Each student will have time to create one pair of lamps. Students will work on color application and wall thickness to accommodate hardware. Bring your own color if you want to make a specific design. Your class tuition includes drilling, not hardware. Prerequisite: at least one 100 level Hot Shop class.

Continuing Glassblowing (HS 203)

This intermediate level class is designed to teach students continuing skills in shape and form. Topics will include: taking even gathers, blowing symmetrical bubbles, shaping techniques, proper tool usage, and finishing shapes. This class is a great alternative to 5 Fridays. This class is limited to 6 intermediate level students. Take this class twice or with Five Fridays before registering for 300 level classes. Prerequisite: Beginning Glassblowing twice or Month of Sundays.

Form and Function (HS 300)

Form and Function offers a great opportunity for students to hone their skills, working on blown forms with an emphasis on complex color techniques, bit work, cane pulling, encalmo techniques, blown feet, and more. This class is limited to 4 intermediate/advanced level students. Prerequisite: Continuing Glassblowing twice or 5 Fridays.

Goblet Making Techniques (HS 301)

Faculty Instructor: Jason Marstall

In this class, Jason will teach various methods for making goblets, including blowing thin bowls, pulling stems, adding solid and blown stems, adding cookie feet and blown feet, and effective assisting. Students will work their way up to multi-component goblets with use of a garage. Bring your sketchbook ideas! This class is limited to 4 intermediate/advanced level students. Prerequisite: Continuing Glassblowing twice or 5 Fridays.
