Warm Shop Classes

Warm Shop classes must have 3-4 students enrolled to run and are limited to between 6-10 students depending on the class. We use 90 COE glass in most of our classes, but students are welcome to bring their own 96 COE glass if they choose. We have a limited stock of sheet glass for sale in our studio. If you have a group of friends that are interested in a particular class, please call SGAA and we will be happy to schedule a class date for your group. Work created in these classes will be available for pick up within 1-2 weeks. NEW FOR 2011-2012: every Hot Shop student is required to take either Learning to Assist OR Back to Basics AND Coldworking Basics OR our Coldworking Refresher Course.

***Every student who comes to participate in glass making classes is required to wear eye protection and closed toed shoes. No exceptions will be made!***

Faculty Instructor

Our Slump Your Own Plate events are quick (1 hour) introductions to glass fusing that we offer year-round. You will learn to cut sheet glass and then, on a clear glass base, create a 2-D composition that we will fuse in a kiln then slump into a 6x6 bowl or plate mold. SYOPs are good for ages 5 and up and are perfect for individuals, families, team building activities, work parties, or tour groups of up to 20 people. Your piece will be ready for pick-up 4-7 days after your appointment or can be shipped at your cost. Call to schedule!

Faculty Instructor

In this 4-hour class, students will learn the basics of glass fusing. Each student will learn how to cut sheet glass using a variety of hand tools; then, you will assemble the pieces into compositions, first making a 5x5 test tile and then working on a larger project.Your larger project will be slumped into a mold of your choice and you will end up with a beautiful piece of art glass for function or display.Students will also learn to use frits (glass chips) and glass stringers to create texture and variety in their designs. This class is sure to be a catalyst for a whole new way of looking at and using glass! No prior experience required.

During this 1-day class, you will learn about glass compatibility, fusing temperatures, and how to properly layer and fuse Dichroic glass to get head-turning results. Each student will complete approximately 5-10 cabochons. Add bails to turn your finished pieces into stunning one-of-a-kind pendants, earrings, pins, andbracelets. Or take this class with Basic Wire Wrapping (BC 100) to make a custom wrapped bail. No supplies included; expect to pay between $20-$45 for Dichroic glass. No prior experience required. During this 2-day class, each student will make one-of-a-kind wind chimes! On day one, students will create fused glass pieces for the components of each wind chime; on day two, you will use wire, fishing line, and beads to assemble them into your finished pieces. We will teach basic glass cutting and wire working techniques. The class fee includes all glass, string, and beads needed to create 2 finished wind chimes. No prior experience required. Return students welcome.

In this class, each student will make a one-of-a-kind mirror frame that will result in one finished project approximately 12"x12". We provide shard glass and mirror for one finished project. Students are encouraged to bring images of design ideas and sketches. No prior experience required. Return students welcome.

Create lasting memories with this amazing technique! Using special transfer paper, your favorite photograph will be fired onto glass and be preserved permanently on your unique art piece. These pieces can be left flat or slumped into forms. Please bring 4-6 photos/images to use during class; your photos will not be ruined. No supplies included; expect to pay between $20-$45 for sheet glass and photo paper. Return students welcome.

In this fun and exciting class, you will learn brush stroke techniques, color blending, and shading methods. Expect to focus on painting techniques during class, not making finished pieces. Your class tuition includes 1-3 flat projects; if students are interested, you can pay kiln fees to slump your pieces. No painting or drawing skills required. Return students welcome.

Faculty Instructor: Seth Fairweather

This great new class will teach students to make molds and cast glass in a kiln. On day one, students will work on waxes and molds, creating both the positive and negative for their glass objects. On day two, students will learn to invest and pack their molds with discussion on various casting techniques. On day three, Seth will go over divesting and coldworking your finished projects. Class will allow for plenty of demo time and student work with direction. Bring objects to cast!! Your materials fee covers your mold materials and glass. Some glass experience helpful, but not necessary.

During this exciting Intensive class, students will learn a plethora of fusing techniques including: basic glass cutting, layering frits and powders, metal inclusions, extensive painting methods, torch working glass rods, and creating depth using multiple firings. Students will complete two desert-themed projects: one 8x12, one 12x16. Bring pictures, sketches, and ideas focusing on the desert! This class is perfect for local Tucsonans and snowbirds alike! Prerequisite: at least (2) 100 level Warm Shop classes.

Spring Flower Intensive (WS 201)

This new intensive class will teach students how to make two different types of floral pieces: one 12x16 flat scenic project and one 3-D slumped multi-flower bouquet (3 flowers). Your flat piece will utilize techniques including: frit layering, glass painting, torch worked stringers and ribbons, and cut glass. You will also make 3 slumped flowers to compose a complex floral arrangement of your own design. Your class tuition includes 2 finished pieces; students can purchase glass to make additional flowers for their bouquets. Bring pictures, sketches, and ideas focusing on flowers! Prerequisite: at least (2) 100 level Warm Shop classes.

Faculty Instructor: Alysa Phiel

This 3-part class will expand on the skills acquired in Beginning Painting on Glass and teach more complex techniques in glass painting. Students will learn to make projects that involve multiple firings to create depth in their piece. You will make mixtures with glass powders to create an ink and use pre-manufactured glass paints to create line drawings, portraits, landscapes, and anything else you can imagine. Projects will also include glass shard, frits of varying sizes, and glass paints using brushes and bottle tips. Class tuition includes 1 flat project. Prerequisite: at least (2) 100 level Warm Shop classes.

The secrets of stunning Dichroic jewelry will be revealed in this 2-day class! On day one, each student will create one 6x6 Dichroic tile. On day two, you will move into our Cold Shop and learn how to saw and polish your tile into shapes to use for cabochons or pendants. Take one of our Beading Classes to learn how to string your creations into jewelry pieces! No supplies included; expect to pay between $20-$45 for Dichroic glass. Return students welcome. Prerequisite: at least (3) 100 level Warm Shop classes.

Hot Techniques in Fusing (WS 301)

8 Mondays, 6 - 9pm (24 hours)

 

Faculty Instructor: Alysa Phiel

This class is for the experienced fuser who is looking to get hotter! We will cover 4 different techniques: vitrigraph, color bars, glass raking, and making frit lace. All of these techniques utilize higher than typical fusing heat to achieve vivid color patterning. Students will create one finished piece for each technique. The goal is to leave with 4 finished pieces and components for future projects; all supplies included. This class limited to 4 intermediate students. Prerequisite: at least (3) 100 level Warm Shop classes.

Glass Raking

Beginning Stenciling with Powders:

Day and times vary (3 hours)

Learn how to make simple stencils you can reuse to create beautiful works of art. You will learn how to properly use powders as the visual focus of your piece. You will make one stencil and one finished project during this 3 hour class. Limited to 4 students.

Focus on Sconces:

Members: $90   Non-Members: $105

Day and times vary (4 hours)

Students will make one 8x8 sconce in this 4 hour class. You will be amazed by the beautiful light fixture you will create! You can also buy supplies to make a matching sconce to accent any room in your house! No experience necessary.

Glass Raking:

Members: $145   Non-Members: $165, includes 2 rakings and 1 finished project

2 Sundays 1 - 5pm (8 hours)

In this class, you will learn to rake glass while it is hot in a kiln, mixing and swirling molten glass into elaborate works of art. Once out of the kiln, these pieces can be made into plates, bowls, or jewelry.

Pot Melt (Turn Scrap into Wonder):

Members: $145   Non-Members: $165

Day and times vary (6 hours)

This class will teach students how to use scrap glass and turn it into a beautiful work of art. Students will set up their scrap glass in a flower pot and, in the kiln, it will drip into a striking mottled design. During the second class, students will slice their glass pieces to create a final piece to be slumped into a mold.

Standing Critters:

Members: $75   Non-Members: $95, includes 1 finished project

Using wonderful new 3-D molds and creative fusing, you will learn how to make these fabulous critters that stand on their own two or four feet. We will have Dichroic glass and sheet glass for purchase.
