Guest Instructor: Peter McGrain

Authentic Traditional Glass Painting is a mandatory skill for any glass artist interested in achieving greater visual sophistication in their work. This class offers a comprehensive introduction into various aspects of genuine glass painting techniques, including the use of traditional glass stainer's paints, silver stains, and kiln-fired enamels. Topics include historical overview of applications and techniques, material types and their sources, with an emphasis on the techniques of tracing, matting, stippling, controlling hardness, application alternatives, studio setup and more. Students begin the process through a series of design strategies which lead to an attainable project plan. Base tiles are created by fusing a color field layer of cathedral glassover an underlying substrate of clear glass. These layers are fused together to form a 1/4” thick tile upon which the painted imagery will be applied.

When the Frit Hits the Fan

Friday - Sunday, 10am - 5pm
January 14 - 16

Guest Instructor: Michael Dupille

Michael is considered one of the pioneers of kiln formed glass. He has developed many of the techniques and methods which are considered the standards in fused glass today. This workshop covers a variety of techniques, and though it is less focused on imagery, much of what is taught may be utilized in creating them, including multiple firings. We’ll cover the basic practices of Fritography, combining them with unusual shapes, and use a variety of dam methods. We will also explore several other ways of working with frit, including making ‘Frit Sticks’, ‘Vitrios’, and a new process called ‘Scratch and Frit”.  I think you’ll find these to be useful and fun to do!... And that’s a tough combo to beat!
