Guest Instructor: Margaret Zinser
This one-day class is geared toward the intermediate beadmaker who wants to learn more about 'reactive' colors in soft glass. Topics covered in the class will include: using Italian soft glass colors with Reichenbach and Kugler frits and cane, 'reactive' colors in the soft glass palette, using silver leaf and foil to create interesting texture and variation, and other unbelievably cool things to do with glass color. This class is for the intermediate beadmaker wanting to take their skills in shaping, structure, and texture in glass a little further. We'll cover sculpting beads with razor blades, a few off-mandrel additions/applications for mandrel beads, and a pendant with a bead bail. As always, Margaret will be happy to address individual roadblocks in technique with students. Bring your questions on shape, color, form, and texture! Don't miss this workshop taught by the king of kinetic glass sculpture! Using borosilicate glass, students will sculpt a variety of plant and animal forms to be combined into larger compositions. Projects will include: trees, flowers, birds, mammals, fish, and human figures. The workshop will also cover a variety of tips and tricks to make multi-piece construction easier. Bring a sketch book for ideas. Intermediate skill level required.

Guest Instructor: Bronwen Heilman
Bronwen is known for her development of the Graal technique for glass painting lampworked beads. This class is designed to help students learn new techniques using an exciting new medium that will enhance your style of bead making. Day one will focus on using powdered enamel colors, with students beginning to paint, flame work, and fire. Day two continues with painting, more torch work and firing. Bronwen's classes combine personal demonstrations as well as one on one tutoring of each student with hands-on practice. Be sure to bring your gift giving ideas, as this workshop will be a great opportunity to make holiday gifts! Intermediate beadmaking skills required.

Guest Instructor: Loren Stump
Directly after the Gem Show, Loren will be presenting his advanced "In the Garden" class. This workshop builds upon the information learned in Loren I and II. The first portion of the class will focus on creating repetitive patterns which will be used to construct a floral murrine. Students will learn cold working techniques, include sawing and polishing the murrine chips that will be used in your finished paperweight. Loren will go over cold assembly, hot sculpture, detail overlay, temperature control, tool use, tungsten holes and the application of murrine. Students should be prepared to work invigorating days at least 10 hours long, making advanced flowers, bees, dragonflies, and anything else you can think up for your garden paperweight! Advanced skill level required

This workshop is geared toward the intermediate beadmaker, specifically addressing ways to improve their shaping and encasing skills to create elegantly shaped, technically superior beads. Starting with fundamental shapes and emphasizing safety, correct posture, and strong technique, Margaret will guide students through a logical progression of "classic" bead shapes. The second day of the class will include instruction on strategies for encasing focal beads, as well as how to deliberately distort base color with clear glass. With each new shape, Margaret will teach a different application for color. Color topics will include: the use of frits; silver leaf, foil, and wire; crushed goldstone; enamels; "neato" reactive colors in the Effetre palette; tricks for developing color in Reichenbach-108. Intermediate skill level required.

Faculty Instructor: Karl Taylor
This workshop will focus on the basics of designing and assembling goblets. We will begin by working on creating even bowls and feet, then move on to basic functional and sculptural stems. From there, students will work to create goblets that are both elegant and structurally sound. Intermediate to advanced skill level required.
